ROLE OVERVIEW:

The Individual Disability Income Underwriter serves as an experienced underwriter within the Individual Disability Income organization, providing underwriting expertise to support sound risk selection, consistency, and quality outcomes across a growing line of business. This role partners closely with underwriting leadership and peers to execute underwriting strategy, contribute to process refinement, and support the continued evolution of underwriting practices.

In addition to core underwriting responsibilities, the role operates within a structured environment designed to promote sustainable workloads and high-quality decision making. The team is experienced and collaborative, with strong bench strength and direct access to leadership, enabling visibility into decisions and opportunities to contribute to initiatives that shape the function.

The ideal candidate brings deep morbidity underwriting expertise, strong analytical and decision-making skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment. This role may be performed remotely, with the expectation of periodic travel to New York City.

What You'll Do:

  • Evaluate IDI applications and determine whether applications should be approved, declined, or if additional information is required based on morbidity, financial, and occupational risks according to company guidelines
  • Interpret underwriting policy and implement established guidelines, department procedures, and regulatory directives
  • Keep current on medical, financial, occupational and multi-life IDI underwriting related developments; be aware of changes in IDI underwriting market practices and follow appropriate response
  • Work effectively with third party administrator in the timely and accurate management of all IDI underwriting cases
  • Proactively engage with agents and product consultants to explain and position underwriting decisions, including modified offers, to support successful case placement
  • Collaborate with agency distribution to promote the IDI product line and build a strong reputation for competitive and responsible offers while delivering professional, timely communication
  • Work with our reinsurance partners to negotiate and secure risk classification
  • Participate in personal training and development opportunities
  • Consult with medical directors and IDI Underwriting management for the purpose of resolving complex medical and non-medical histories
  • Assist with developing and mentoring junior underwriters

What You'll Bring:

  • Experience in handling complex IDI underwriting cases; proven ability to evaluate financial, medical and occupational information to determine the most appropriate underwriting offer; strong working knowledge of medical terminology and awareness of how various medical impairments interact and affect individual morbidity risk
  • Experience leveraging AI tools to enhance the underwriting process, improve workflow and gain efficiencies
  • Experience with using rules engines, predictive models is a plus
  • Experience with using AI-driven medical record summaries, RX and DX data, and DHD in IDI risk assessment is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent insurance or underwriting experience considered
  • Typically, 5+ years of underwriting experience, with demonstrated technical expertise in IDI
  • LOMA and/or AHIP Insurance Designations preferred (ACS, DIA, DIF, ALMI, FALU, etc.)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Pay Transparency

Salary Range: $90,000-$128,500

Overtime eligible: Exempt

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes

Sales bonus eligible: No

Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.

Please note: This role requires FINRA licensed and/or FINRA Associated Person pre-hire fingerprinting.
