Data Scientist Advisor

Provides expert leadership at the enterprise level related to vast quantities of data (including disparate data), enterprise analytics, statistical modeling, and initiatives and works on the leading edge of technology, tools, and methodology to ensure that FedEx is a leader in Business and Artificial Intelligence. Leads lower level Data Scientists in descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, prescriptive and ensemble modeling, advanced statistical techniques, use of database tools and/or other approaches in quantitative analysis of complex business situations. Creates and implements solutions from initial concept to fully tested production and communicates results to a broad range of audiences. Expert in the use of all data types, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and high- complexity predictive modeling and fact-based management to drive decision making. Leads cross functional projects and programs. Routinely works on multiple highly complex assignments concurrently.

Essential Functions

  • Performs both qualitative analysis (e.g., content analysis, phenomenology, hypothesis testing, network analysis, sentiment analysis, and classification) and quantitative analysis (e.g., clustering regression, pattern recognition, descriptive and inferential statistics) on large data sets to understand trends and relationships between variables to gain predictive insights and drive business results.

  • Designs and implements experiments to answer targeted questions, solve known issues and suggest/influence the direction of the business by effectively communicating with business partners and functional leaders to understand and prioritize key business challenges.

  • Guides others in the collection of new data, refinement strategy, researches, tests, recommends, and implements improvements in the tools and techniques used by FedEx to manage and access data and information.

  • Prioritizes problems so that the team works on the most valuable cases; leads investigations into multiple streams of data to solve complex business problems.

  • Designs and implements reporting dashboards that track and visually communicate key business metrics and provide actionable insights.

  • Identifies internal and external information sources, builds strong working relationships with subject matter experts and leadership within FedEx and the external marketplace.

  • Act as primary author of whitepapers and will present various industry topics as it relates to Data Science at conferences.

  • Collaborates with IT departments and communicates changes in industry trends and techniques to ensure the team is current with tools, knowledge and methods.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills/Knowledge

  • Experience in LLM Architectures, RAG, Agentic Frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex), Prompt Engineering, Fine-tuning

  • Experience in Data & Engineering including Python, API Integrations, MLOps, Cloud AI Platforms (Google cloud platform, Azure)

  • Experience in Data Analytics tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker or similar)

  • Strong working experience in SQL, Big data technologies(Data bricks, Data plex) and UNIX based environments

  • Understanding of Statistical Modeling, machine learning and AI algorithms

  • Demonstrated skill at data cleansing, data quality assessment, and using analytics for data assessment

  • Domain expertise in MarTech stacks, Omnichannel Retail and E-commerce

Location

  • The desired location for this position would be Plano, TX however, this position may be located anywhere within the United States excluding Alaska, Hawaii, and US territories. Depending on your location, you may be required to work at a FedEx Campus several times per week.


Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline required. A Master’s degree in a related field may off set two years of the required experience. Related experience may offset degree requirements and related education/degree may offset experience requirements.

Minimum Experience

Seven (7) years experience required in solving analytics problems through the application of data science techniques or work experience in measurement and analysis, quantitative business problem solving, solutions implementation, operations analysis, marketing analysis, simulation development and/or predictive analytics.

Experience should include using most of the following:

  • Machine Learning Frameworks: SKLearn, XGBoost, TensorFlow, PyTorch, MLlib, and other core ML frameworks.
  • Programming Languages: Python, Scala, R, C++, Java, and other modern languages.
  • Data Tools and Frameworks: MLFlow, Databricks, Spark, Kafka, Hive, Hadoop, and others.
  • Cloud Environments: Azure, AWS, etc. 
  • SQL (Structured Query Language).
  • ETL (Extract-Transform-Load) concepts, query performance tuning and testing.
  • Visualization tools such as Tableau, Spotfire, and Power BI.

Proficient with MS office applications.
