The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions. This position serves as the Western Region Field Representative, responsible for conducting agency audits and providing oversight of Commission course delivery sites across the following North Carolina counties: Surry, Yadkin, Iredell, Gaston, Lincoln, Catawba, Alexander, Wilkes, Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga, Caldwell, Burke, Cleveland, Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, McDowell, Rutherford, Polk, Madison, Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, Jackson, Transylvania, Swain, Macon, Graham, Cherokee, and Clay. Due to the extensive travel required within this region, the Field Representative must reside in one of the North Carolina counties listed above. This is a home-based position, and the selected candidate will be provided with a government-issued vehicle and the necessary office equipment to effectively perform job duties. The position of Field Representative for Criminal Justice Standards Division is a unique and multifaceted role requiring a highly self-motivated individual with strong initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities and demands a thorough understanding of the Commission’s rules, standards for law enforcement training, and agency compliance requirements. This position requires exceptional attention to detail, flexibility, strong investigative and analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a comprehensive knowledge of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission requirements. Duties and Responsibilities: • Criminal Justice Standards Commission/Division Liaison Role: Serving as the primary regional point of contact between school directors, the Deputy Director, the Director of Criminal Justice Training and Standards, and the Criminal Justice Standards Commission. • Conduct Audits and Site Visits (Agencies and Commission accredited delivery sites): Performing scheduled and unannounced audits of Commission accredited programs to verify student records, instructor credentials, curriculum compliance, and overall program integrity. • Conduct Investigations and Inquiries: Conducting inquiries that may lead to formal investigations, potentially progressing through the Probable Cause process. • Administer Comprehensive State Examinations: Preparing, scheduling, administering, and overseeing state comprehensive exams for all Criminal Justice officers. • Training School Accreditations/Instructor Oversight: Verifying that instructors meet Commission qualifications and are adequately prepared to deliver approved curriculum. Criminal Justice Standards is a Section of the Training and Standards Division in the Department of Justice, which is composed of four major units. These include the N.C. Justice Academy with two separate campuses, one East and one West, the Criminal Justice Standards Section, the Sheriffs’ Standards Section, and Private Protective Services. This Division provides a consolidated team of agencies and offices whose primary goal is to ensure and advance the competence and integrity of the criminal justice professions in North Carolina. The Training and Standards Division promotes the goal of competence and integrity in the criminal justice professions through employment and certification standards, professional training, and technical assistance. The Division accomplishes this goal through the provision of coordinated staffing support to the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission (G. S. 17C), the Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission (G. S. 17E), the North Carolina Justice Academy (G. S. 17D), Private Protective Services (G. S. 74C) and Alarm Systems Licensing (G. S. 74D). In addition, the Division works to promote coordination within the criminal justice system to minimize duplication and effective utilization of current resources. Some travel is required. The selected candidate is subject to a background investigation. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences • 5 years or more of full time, certified law enforcement experience. • Experience conducting audits and completing detailed summary reports. • Experience conducting investigations and completing detailed summary reports. • Documented history of working successfully in a remote work environment.
